Georgian Foreign Minister Meets Canadian Counterpart

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili in the Second International Conference on Returning Ukrainian Children, Detained Civilians and Prisoners of War in Toronto on September 28–29.

The conference, co-hosted by Canada, Ukraine and Norway, brought together foreign ministers and senior officials to strengthen international efforts to return Ukrainian children, detained civilians and prisoners of war, as well as to support rehabilitation and reintegration for those who have returned.

During the conference, Botchorishvili highlighted the humanitarian consequences of the war and drew parallels with Georgia’s own experience of displacement and occupation. She noted that Russia’s continued occupation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region has left hundreds of thousands of people displaced and unable to return to their homes. Georgia’s foreign minister also reaffirmed Tbilisi’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

On the sidelines of the conference, Botchorishvili met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Their discussions covered bilateral relations, Black Sea security and the regional situation, as well as prospects for stronger trade and economic ties. The Middle Corridor was also raised during the meeting, with the Georgian side emphasizing the country’s role in the transport route linking Asia with Europe and Canada’s efforts to diversify its trade.

Botchorishvili separately met Ahmed Hussen, chair of the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. The discussions covered parliamentary cooperation and opportunities to deepen political, trade and economic ties between the two countries.
