Georgian Opposition Leader Warns: Putin May Enter Georgia to Protect Russian Citizens
On May 24, United National Movement Chairman Levan Khabeishvili stated that if someone incites the start of a war in Georgia, it is the Russian dream [hinting at the ruling Georgian Dream].
"In the coming months, Ukraine will definitely succeed in the barbaric war that Putin is waging in Ukraine against the Ukrainian people. Ukraine will surely win this war. The civilized world and peace will win, and at this time, we see anti-state statements from the Prime Minister of the Russian party, "Antony" Garibashvili, who says that it turns out that Ukraine, America, and the civilized world wants to involve Georgia in the war. This is obviously a lie and Russian propaganda; this can be heard only in the Kremlin, only Margarita Simonyan and Solovyov make such statements, and Putin and Lavrov make such statements, but, unfortunately for us, Irakli Garibashvili also makes such statements in Georgia. In fact, Ukraine only asks us for friendship against the common enemy and demands that we not give economic support to the murderer, Putin," he added.
"If anyone incites a war in Georgia, it is the 'Russian dream' when hundreds of thousands of Russians enter Georgia. Let's not forget that tomorrow Putin may say he is entering Georgia to protect these Russian citizens. If anyone provokes all this, it is the Russian party," Khabeishvili said.
Speaking at a panel discussion at the annual Qatar Economic Forum, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed resentment towards the country's Western partners because they did not support Tbilisi in the Georgian-Ossetian war in August 2008 to the extent that they now support Ukraine against Russia.
"We had a war in 2008; remember someone who imposed sanctions on Russia, our war is not a war, but the war in Ukraine is a war?" Garibashvili said. According to him, after the 2008 war, the US and Europe continued to conduct business with Russia as usual. "The Georgian economy will collapse, and we will harm our people if we impose bilateral economic sanctions against Russia. You know well, we had a war in 2008. Do you remember anyone who imposed sanctions against Russia during the war? Nobody. No one in the world had a correct or adequate response. So my question is: where is the logic? Our war is not a war, but the war in Ukraine is a war? We were very disappointed that after the 2008 war with Russia, business went on as usual. After that devastating war, 20% of our country’s territory is still occupied by Russia, Russia has built two military bases on our historical land, Russia has recognized the so-called independence of our historical regions – and this occupation continues," the Prime Minister of Georgia said. "I would like to confirm once again that we support Ukraine, the Ukrainian people. We want this war to end as soon as possible. We have joined over 500 resolutions and applications on all international platforms and fully comply with international sanctions. The State Department stated that the financial institutions of Georgia, the National Bank, fully comply with the financial sanctions," he stated.
