Georgian Political Landscape Rocked: Government and Opposition Weigh in on President's Impeachment

| News, Politics, Georgia

On September 4, Levan Khabeishvili, the chairman of the United National Movement, stated that for the United National Movement, the impeachment issue of the President is a dirty game between Bidzina Ivanishvili and Russia. He added, "The National Movement will not participate in these Russian games."

According to Khabeishvili, Georgian Dream is trying to cover other important topics, including the Shovi tragedy, by raising the issue of impeachment. "For the National Movement, the issue of impeachment is a dirty game of Bidzina Ivanishvili and Russia. We are not interested in this issue at all, it is not important. When this is a topical issue in the media, it is in the interest of only Bidzina Ivanishvili and Russia. We, the society, need answers, including regarding Shovi, since we have a murderous government, people are wondering why people were abandoned in Shovi," he added.

On the same day, Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said that the Georgian people did not give the President of Georgia the authority to implement foreign policy. This authority has been given to the Government of Georgia by the Georgian people.

Shalva Papuashvili added, "The Georgian Parliament, Government, and Georgian Dream as the ruling power, are pursuing the only course that involves Georgia's rapprochement with the Euro-Atlantic structures, Georgia's accession to the European Union and NATO. This is the political task of the Georgian Dream."

"During her speech to the Parliament, the President of Georgia stated, and also in other public speeches, that last year, Georgia did not deserve the status of a candidate, and Georgia does not deserve the status of a candidate this year because, as she said, the implementation of recommendations is only formal in nature, and in reality, these recommendations are not implemented. Of course, this kind of representation of the Georgian people hurts our European integration interests if its position is the same as that of the radical opposition. They also say that they want the status of a candidate," the official added.

On September 5, Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized that Salome Zourabichvili and the radical opposition have the same agenda.

"Salome Zourabichvili and the radical opposition have the same agenda; everyone can see that. Their rhetoric coincides with each other. Therefore, it is not surprising that they act with the same interests. This is their agenda, which stems from the fact that they have a common patron - the "global war party." They are doing everything so that Georgia is not given the candidate status; this is their main interest, and at the same time, if the country is given the candidate status, Salome Zourabichvili will try her best to attribute this decision to herself. It is clear what drives them, this is another manifestation of their radical agenda," Kobakhidze said.

The Chairman of Georgian Dream explained why the impeachment process had been launched. "Leaving this without reacting by the ruling team would be disrespectful to the constitution of Georgia. When the constitution is blatantly violated, especially by the President of Georgia, it is the responsibility of the ruling team to respond effectively to such a blatant act. That's why we started the impeachment process even though the ruling team did not have 100 votes to complete this process. Although the collective National Movement declared Salome Zourabichvili a spy, traitor, and so on, they have the same agenda today. Therefore, of course, they will not support the impeachment procedure," Kobakhidze said.
