Georgia's Defense Minister Speaks Out on Former Minister's Involvement in Billion-Dollar Scam
On April 17, Georgian Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze said that the authorities of the times of former President Mikheil Saakashvili organized a robbery of the state, and then they committed the theft of money from pensioners of countries friendly to Georgia.
"It was an organized robbery of the state by the previous government. This story did not end with this robbery, the continuation of this was the theft of money from pensioners of countries friendly to us. Of course, this is very regrettable for us. We will always support law enforcement officers as much as possible so that such schemes no longer work either in Europe or Georgia," the minister added, commenting on the investigation of the British company BBC.
According to Burchuladze, Georgian law enforcement officers have worked closely with partner countries and have achieved good results. "Certainly, it should be clarified how the investigative actions should continue from a legal point of view - in our country, in another country, or jointly," the minister stressed.
As previously reported by Caucasus Watch, on April 12, the BBC published an article titled "On the hunt for the businessmen behind a billion-dollar scam," outlining the findings of a year-long investigative reporting project on a global trading network that cheated unwary clients. Davit Kezerashvili, the former Defense Minister of Georgia, was ultimately identified after the inquiry uncovered several names that pointed to him.
