Georgia’s Ex-President Holds Meetings in Washington to Forge Anti-GD Front

| News, Politics, Georgia

The fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, is attempting to establish contact with the new head of the White House, Donald Trump. To this end, she has been in Washington for a week. She was invited to the inauguration of the 47th US President by Republican Congressman and head of the Helsinki Commission, Joe Wilson. The day before, Wilson reiterated to Georgian Dream leaders and businessmen that they should prepare for even more sanctions.

In numerous interviews with American media, Salome Zourabichvili continues to outline reasons why President Donald Trump and his administration should pay closer attention to Georgia. Explaining the purpose of her messages during various meetings over the past week, she told Voice of America:
"My message was that Georgia is at a critical stage, and the region where we are located is very important for the United States. It is necessary to pay attention to what is happening in Georgia, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea."

When asked why it is important for the US government not to recognize the current Georgian government, Zourabichvili responded:
"The US cannot recognize a government that came to power through election fraud and unconstitutional actions. The convocation of the Georgian parliament in its current composition violated both the letter and the spirit of the Constitution. They [the authorities] did not wait for the decision of the Constitutional Court, which is another violation. Today, there are no independent institutions in Georgia. All institutions are controlled by one party and one person. This undermines everything the US has supported in Georgia for more than 30 years—from creating an army and reforming the judicial system to combating corruption. What is happening today destroys all these achievements. The US cannot tolerate humiliation from a small country and a regime that disregards the efforts of a long-standing partner."

She added:
"I have listened to statements by President Trump and the new Secretary of State. If America wants to be first and to project strength, it cannot allow itself to be humiliated in the Caucasus by a country with a population of 3.7 million, ruled by one individual who dictates policy and serves Mr. Putin’s interests. This does not demonstrate strength; it shows weakness. This is a geopolitical battle. For us, it is a democratic struggle—we are not strong enough for a geopolitical fight. We need attention and political engagement from the United States, including decisive statements to Russia, saying: leave Georgia alone."

Zourabichvili conveyed similar messages during meetings at the McCain Institute and the American Enterprise Institute, as well as in conversations with American journalists covering foreign policy, including those from The Christian Science Monitor.

During informal discussions, she also addressed Georgian-Chinese relations, describing the strategic partnership agreement between Tbilisi and Beijing as "unconstitutional." According to Zourabichvili, the document, signed in 2023, was never seen by members of parliament or the public before its approval.

She also visited the Capitol at the invitation of Senators Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party) and Roger Wicker (Republican Party). Photos of the meeting were published on the senators’ official pages.
