Iran Announces Plans for Reinstating Azerbaijani Embassy Operations

On December 23, Iranian and Azerbaijani Prosecutor Generals Mohammad Kazem Movahedi-Azad and Kamran Aliyev discussed and exchanged views on recent agreements, bilateral legal and judicial cooperation, including the conclusion of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Prosecutor General's Offices of the two countries in an online meeting.

During the conversation, the parties reviewed the tragic incident related to the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran and the process of prosecution of the person who committed it by the Iranian judicial system. "In this context, after the removal of formal obstacles and the conclusion of the case, it was announced that the time of the trial will be determined and will be held shortly," the Iranian embassy noted.

The information also stated that at the meeting, the parties who called the relations of the two neighboring states friendship and brotherhood stressed that a new chapter in bilateral relations had begun. 

The Prosecutor General of Iran invited the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan, Kamran Aliyev, to visit Iran.

On December 25, Nasser Kanaani, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, stated that a roadmap has been prepared for the resumption of activities of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran. "This meeting is part of the efforts of the two countries to resolve remaining issues in the process of relations between the countries and regarding the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran. To date, the process has been positive, and many aspects of this case have been resolved. A roadmap has been developed for the resumption of the activities of the Azerbaijani Embassy, and efforts have been successfully continued. We have witnessed good trends in relations between the two countries in other areas as well. Successful negotiations were also conducted in the field of trade," Kanaani added.

Notably, At around 8:00 a.m. local time on January 27, 2023, an attack occurred against the Azerbaijani Embassy located in Tehran. Using a Kalashnikov weapon, the assailant went past the security checkpoint and started shooting inside the embassy while personnel attempted to neutralize him. Two guards were injured in the attack, and Orkhan Asgarov, the chief of the embassy's security staff, was killed.
