Ivanishvili Launches GD Election Campaign
Against the backdrop of Georgian Dream's new headquarters, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the party's founder and honorary chairman, surrounded by his closest allies, officially launched the party's election campaign. In his speech, Ivanishvili criticized what he called the " Global War Party," claiming that it has significant influence over European and U.S. bureaucracies. He argued that this influence creates a false impression among Georgians that there is a conflict between Georgia and the West. However, he suggested that this perception would dissipate once the war in Ukraine was over.
Ivanishvili's rhetoric echoed his controversial April 29 speech, in which he endorsed a "global war conspiracy theory" and hinted at repressive measures against opponents after the October 2024 elections. He claimed that the "Global War Party," frustrated by Georgian Dream's opposition to Georgia's involvement in the Ukraine conflict, was now seeking to reinstate the opposition, specifically targeting the United National Movement (UNM) and other opposition leaders, including former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and President Salome Zourabichvili.
Ivanishvili declared, "Either you start the war or you leave [power]: this is an unacceptable offer, and the Georgian people will give a clear answer on October 26. He framed the upcoming elections as a decisive battle to support peace, end radicalism and polarization, maintain stability, and defend national dignity, all aimed at preserving Georgia's European perspective.
Warning that "even one wrong step will lead to the victory of the network of agents," he stressed the need to bring to justice the "collective UNM," which he blamed for the 2008 war and the what he called temporary loss of Georgian territory. Ivanishvili presented the elections as a referendum "between war and peace," "slavery and dignity," and "the dark past and the bright future. He expressed confidence that the majority of Georgians would choose peace, dignity and prosperity, laying the foundation for the physical and spiritual salvation of the nation and its European future.
Ivanishvili also speculated that global and regional interests would shift within a year, possibly ending the war in Ukraine and resolving misunderstandings with Europe and America.
At the end of his speech, Ivanishvili unveiled the Georgian Dream campaign slogan: "With peace, dignity and prosperity to Europe. He set a goal of winning a two-thirds majority in parliament to eradicate what he called "the network of agents, radicalism, polarization and liberal fascism," and promised just retribution for the UNM's alleged crimes after October 26.
He also touched on Georgia's relation with China: "I would like to thank the Chinese government for its special support to Georgia. This is the result for which the Georgian Dream team and I personally have been laying the groundwork for years. I would like to emphasize here that deepening our cooperation with China is not an alternative to cooperation with the United States of America and the European Union. On the contrary, it is a complementary factor for the common cooperation, which should be deepened in the coming years. In order for Georgia to develop its own unifying trade and economic function, it is necessary to cooperate with both sides of trade and economic relations - the West and the East. I am sure that next year the efforts of the Georgian government will be appreciated in the West as well. I am sure that everyone will understand that by maintaining peace in Georgia, we have done their work along with the Georgian work," said Bidzina Ivanishvili.
