Ivanishvili's New Role in Georgian Politics: Honorary Chairman with PM Nomination Rights
The changes approved by the seventh extraordinary congress held by "Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia" on December 30, 2023, were published on the National Public Registry Agency website.
With the changes, the party's honorary chairman is added to the party structure. According to the charter, the party congress can choose a person "who has made special merits for the country and the party" as the party's honorary chairman.
According to the same document, the honorary chairman is the party's main political advisor. The new statute defines the functions of the political council, among which the document states that the political council includes the party's honorary chairman, the chairman of the party, and 15 members elected by the party congress.
The political council meeting is convened by the party's honorary chairman or the party's chairman on his own initiative or at the request of at least one-third of the political council members.
The new charter stipulates that the political council "approves the candidacy of the Prime Minister of Georgia on the nomination of the party's honorary chairman." In addition, the party's honorary chairman can also convene an extraordinary congress.
"An extraordinary congress of the party can be convened by the decision of the party's honorary chairman, the chairman of the party, or the political council," the party document says. Bidzina Ivanishvili, former Prime Minister of Georgia and founder of "Georgian Dream," was elected as the party's honorary chairman at the congress of "Georgian Dream" on December 30.
This announcement caused a wave of reactions from Georgian politicians. The leader of the "Justice" party, Eka Beselia, said that it seems that the conflict between opposing groups within the "Georgian Dream" is reaching its peak, and Bidzina Ivanishvili thought that he should appear openly.
"Girchi" leader Iago Khvichia said Ivanishvili should act as a true philanthropist and respond to Saakashvili with soul-stirring kindness and charity. He added that this would be a step towards depolarization - Mikheil Saakashvili should be allowed to participate in the country's politics, not from the "Viva Medi" facility where he is held, but as befits a politician.
"It is inconceivable that there are no crises in the ruling party. It is inconceivable that some groups did not fight with each other there, this is impossible in such a large conglomerate as the ruling party," Gigi Tsereteli, one of the leaders of "European Georgia," said.
He called Ivanishvili's explanation that he was worried about the opposition's weakness in the ruling party a propaganda lie. As Gigi Tsereteli stated, on the contrary, the task of the "Georgian Dream" was always related to weakening the opposition.
"Bidzina Ivanishvili, in general, tries to be an enigmatic figure, his steps are predictable, and to some extent, as we can see, this discussion is taking place in society."
