90 deputies attended a session of the People’s Assembly of Dagestan and voted on the current acting head of Dagestan on October 14.

82 out of 90 deputies of the People's Assembly voted for Sergey Alimovich Melikov, who has overseen the region since October 2020.

"Sergey Alimovich Melikov has been elected the head of the Republic of Dagestan," said Artur Israpilov, chairman of the counting commission.

Addressing the deputies of the People's Assembly, Melikov thanked them for their trust and support. "The confidence of the president of the country, support of the People's Assembly is a powerful resource for solving the painful problems of Dagestan, for putting it on the trajectory of sustainable and dynamic development. The wise Dagestan people have always made fateful decisions on their own way towards the formation and strengthening of their statehood. I understand that I am becoming a part of this chronicle, I am aware of my colossal responsibility before all our multinational people," said the elected head of the republic.

Melikov officially took office with the following oath. "I swear to faithfully serve the multinational Dagestan people, observe the Constitution of the Russian Federation, federal laws, the Constitution of the Republic of Dagestan and the laws of the Republic of Dagestan, respect and protect the rights and freedoms of man and citizen, the unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Dagestan, honestly and conscientiously fulfil the high duties entrusted to me the head of the Republic of Dagestan," he stated.

The government of the republic resigned. The corresponding order was signed on October 14 by the chairman of the regional government Abdulpakh Amirkhanov.

According to regional legislation, the head of Dagestan is elected by the deputies of the republican parliament from among the candidates nominated by the head of state on the proposal of the parties represented in the State Duma and the People's Assembly of the republic. On September 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented three candidates for the post of head of Dagestan: the acting head of the republic, Sergey Melikov (nominated by the ruling United Russia party), a member of the republic’s electoral committee, since September 2021, deputy of the National Assembly Samir Abdulkhalikov (Communist Party of the Russian Federation) and deputy chairman of the republican parliament Kamila Davdieva ("Fair Russia - For the Truth"). Two deputies voted for Davdiev, two more voted for Abdulkhalikov.

The chairman of the regional parliament, Zaur Askenderov, said that Melikov was elected head of Dagestan for a five-year term.
