Nikol Pashinyan: "Armenia Aims to Prevent War Through Border Adjustment Talks"
At a meeting with residents of villages in the Tavush region of the republic on March 18, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that there is a real possibility to start the process of delimitation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the section from Baghannis to Berkaber.
"Azerbaijan raises the issue of four non-enclave villages, we are talking about 31 villages. Azerbaijan uses the argument that the actual territory of none of the settlements of Armenia is under the control of Azerbaijan, i.e., the residential territory of any village is not under the control of Azerbaijan. They say: let us liberate the settlements ourselves, and then we will talk about the vital parts of the villages. Of course, we object, saying that a village is not only a village council but also its vital territories," the head of the government presented the situation at the talks. He added, "We should not allow war."
"And that's why we decided that we have to adjust Armenia's border in this section. We are doing this not only for the sake of Armenia but also specifically for the villages of Voskepar and Kirants to ensure their security," Pashinyan noted. He added, "We can go and tell (Azerbaijan) that no, we are not going to do anything."
"This means that at the end of the week, a war will start. I know what will happen at the end of this war," the head of the government pointed out, explaining that after the next armed conflict, residents will ask him why he, having information about the threat of the start of hostilities, did not warn them.
It should be noted that Pashinyan's statements in Tavush caused a wave of negative reactions inside Armenia. The prime minister's political opponents from the pro-Russian opposition accused him of preparations to "surrender new territories".
