Nikol Pashinyan Blames Azerbaijan for Exodus of Karabakh Armenians; Azerbaijan Responds

During a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on September 28, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that in the coming days there will be no Armenians left in Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to him, the exodus of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh continues because of Azerbaijan's policy of ethnic cleansing. "This is an act of ethnic cleansing and deprivation of homeland, which we have long declared and warned the international community about," Pashinyan added.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the statements of the international organizations. At the same time, he noted that without concrete actions, such statements are just another statistic for history, which in the future will allow various countries to formally distance themselves from this crime and declare that they have condemned it. Pashinyan believes that without proper political and legal steps, such statements are tantamount to consenting to what is happening.

Azerbaijan responds

On September 28, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry stated that Azerbaijan strongly condemns and rejects the statement of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"Such alarmist views, in addition to contradicting the statement of the Prime Minister of Armenia on September 21 that there is no threat to Armenian residents from Azerbaijan, also undermine Azerbaijan's efforts in the direction of humanitarian assistance and reintegration and undermine possible prospects for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia," it added.

"The Armenian leadership is ignoring the fact that the central government institutions of Azerbaijan have immediately begun to implement the necessary humanitarian assistance measures and to meet the urgent needs of the Armenian residents of the Karabakh region," it said.

"In order to establish peace and security in the region, Armenia should remove obstacles to the reintegration process of the Armenian residents and focus on the successful conclusion of the peace treaty negotiation process based on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of both countries," the release concluded.
