Protest Erupts Outside Iranian Embassy in Baku as Azerbaijani Citizen Remains Missing
On March 17, the relatives of Farid Safarli, an Azerbaijani student studying in Germany who went missing in Iran, protested in front of the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan. Protesters chanted, "Bring Farid back!", "Report on Farid!", "Vote for mother's voice!" and raised some written slogans calling for the student's release.
The audience of the action demanded that the Iranian government create conditions for Farid Safarli to communicate with his family and provide detailed information about his fate.
The Safarli Rights Protection Committee's leader, Ilgar Huseynli, reported that Dilara Askerova, the mother of Safarli, who resides in Germany, visited the Iranian Embassy in Berlin. "There, she was told that the local authorities were looking into the matter. The German police are also investigating. However, Iranian authorities, despite the best efforts of Farid's relatives, are not providing any information about Farid's whereabouts and fate," he said. Huseynli said they submitted a resolution to the Iranian embassy at the end of the action.
Aykhan Hajizadeh, the head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, stated that Iran has not yet informed Azerbaijan about this issue, and an investigation is underway.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a note to the Iranian embassy to clarify the information about the disappearance of Azerbaijani citizen Farid Safarli in Iran. According to official information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received an application on March 9 regarding the fact that Farid Safarli, a citizen of Azerbaijan and a student of Jena University in Germany, visited Iran on February 20 but has not heard from him since March 4.
For her part, Dilara Asgarova, Farid Safarli's mother, stated that some time ago, Farid met an Iranian woman who came to practice in Jena, Germany, whose identity was unknown to her. "After the practice of the lady, she returned to Iran. Nevertheless, there was a telephone conversation between them. They decided to meet in Istanbul. Farid went to Istanbul, and the visa of the lady he met at that time was not fixed. After that, Farid went to Iran from Istanbul," she added.
