Russian Foreign Ministry Addresses Abkhazia's Participation in Union State and Georgian Relations with West

In an interview with the Multipolarity project, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Abkhaz people would decide whether to participate in the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

She noted that the integration associations in which Moscow participates provide unique, practical opportunities for cooperation and development. "The choice of whether to participate in such associations is up to the people of Abkhazia and the leadership to whom it delegates the appropriate powers," Zakharova stressed.

Moreover, Zakharova added, it is obvious that the West sees Georgia as a zone of its exclusive interests and allows itself to ignore the sovereignty of this state in order to realise its interests. She noted that Georgia is not a US protectorate, but a young democratic state going through a complex history of formation. "The US is not only interfering, it is trying to moderate the situation from within through so-called NGOs, 'public figures'. A significant part of what is happening in Georgia is being directed from abroad," Zakharova added.

According to her, many already see and understand the methodology and technologies of the West and have a specific immunity to counteract them. Zakharova also said that the American "Summit for Democracy" is an attempt to create the illusion of Washington's world leadership, it is not capable of influencing real politics. "With this format, the United States is trying to demonstrate its exclusivity and build a new order, bypassing the UN and international law," the official emphasized.

"The United States does not have the right to decide who meets the norms of democracy since today they themselves do not even remotely resemble a democratic state," the Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman said.
