Saakashvili Advocates for New Political Committee, Urges Unity in Opposition

| News, Politics, Georgia

On December 20, Mikheil Saakashvili, the former imprisoned president of Georgia, appealed to the United National Movement to create a committee of political activities and unity. Saakashvili noted that there should be a political consultation, which will generate new ideas through national consent and consensus. Saakashvili believes that 20-25 members should be included in the political council. He expressed his desire to be a member of such a union.

"We need full coordination of the opposition, regardless of different views. Without this coordination, the work cannot be done. Strength is in unity! I am absolutely sure of that. I would also like to propose the creation of a committee of political activities and unity with the National Movement, as is the case in the US. The chairman of the National Movement, the chairman of the faction, the secretary general, and the chairman of the political council should enter the committee, but also persons known to the public should be there, Sopo Japaridze, who will be my representative in this committee, should be there. I want to tell everyone that this committee should be a place to generate ideas, it should be a virtually bureaucracy-free, flexible, national consent structure, a political consultation, which through national consent and consensus will be a generator of new ideas, quick response, and a place for dialogue with others. I want to enter this committee together with you, discuss together with you, and create a situation together with you that makes our fighting ability completely unambiguous, and in this direction, we must do everything together and move forward very quickly. 20-25 people should enter the committee. Maybe we will also choose the chairman in the future, as we will decide together," Saakashvili added.

"We know what their intentions are - they intend to stay in power at all costs, but Europe means a change of government. Therefore, I imagine the next elections very specifically, first of all, there should be full coordination of the opposition. This is the most historic election since 1990," the former Georgian president noted.

Moreover, Saakashvili said that Georgia will be a full member of the European Union in 4 years after the change of power. He promises the public that the opposition will win this election with a very broad coalition. "[…] When the association agreement was signed, I was no longer the president. Then, the European Parliament invited me to the session; illegal criminal cases had already been initiated against me. The European Parliament greeted me standing up; it was somehow nice that they still did not forget my merits. I said there would be candidate status, and we got candidate status. Now, I say that we will be members of the European Union, but we must win these elections first. The Georgian people must win this election. The Georgian people cannot be humiliated, we cannot be the property of one man, Georgia must be your property," he added.
