Serbian President Vučić Announces Azerbaijan Gas Supply Suspension, Later Clarifies Continuity of Supplies

On January 11, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that Azerbaijan had informed Serbia of a suspension in natural gas supplies due to technical issues at the Shah Deniz field, resulting in the loss of 1.7 million cubic meters of gas per day for an indefinite period.
Vučić, speaking at a press conference in Belgrade after meeting with US Undersecretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma, explained that Azerbaijan cited insurmountable difficulties at the Shah Deniz field and could not provide a timeline for restoring supplies. He stated that Serbia would have to rely on its gas reserves, consuming up to 3 million cubic meters daily for the next four months if the suspension persisted. He also alluded to concurrent challenges, including US sanctions on Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS).
On January 12, reliable sources from AnewZ reported that reports of a two-month suspension were inaccurate. While a technical issue at the Shah Deniz Alpha platform temporarily reduced gas flow, the Shah Deniz Bravo platform remained fully operational, ensuring the continuity of exports. Supplies were expected to resume shortly.
On the same day, Vučić expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for its efforts to avoid a suspension of gas supplies. Writing on X, he thanked Azerbaijan and its President, noting that despite force majeure issues, gas supplies to Serbia would continue uninterrupted. Vučić also shared his anticipation of welcoming the Azerbaijani President in Belgrade soon.
