On 28 January, the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) published their statistics for the year 2020. The document provides different statistical results about the cases examined by the Court during the year 2020.

In 2020, 41,700 applications were allocated to a judicial formation, which was an overall decrease of 6% compared with 2019 (44,500). However, according to the President of the ECHR Robert Spano, the number of applications leading to a Grand Chamber or Chamber judgment had increased by 22% compared with 2019. “This is a very important point, since the judgments delivered by the Grand Chamber and the Chambers are the most complex ones and raise the most serious issues,” he stated. 

Seventy percent of the 62000 pending cases concerned four countries: the Russian Federation (13645 cases) Turkey (11750), Ukraine (10408)  and Romania (7561); which were followed by Italy (3469), Azerbaijan (2040) and Serbia (1755). 

Armenia had 1407 cases in total before the court. 1152 of those cases await its first examination, 171 were communicated, 77 were ordered to a single judge or committee, and 7 were admissible. In total, 15 judgements concerning Armenia were delivered, 38 were communicated to the government, 428 declared inadmissible and 213 allocated to a judicial formation. In the year 2020, 14 judgements were delivered in regard to Armenia, and in all 14 at least one violation was found. The highest number of cases was recorded in regard to the right to liberty and security (11) followed by the right for a fair trial (4) and right to education (3). 

Azerbaijan had 2040 cases in total before the court. 1418 of those cases await its first examination, 618 were communicated, one was ordered to a single judge or committee, and 3 were admissible. In total, 74 judgements concerning Azerbaijan were delivered, 159 were communicated to the government, 360 declared inadmissible and 525 allocated to a judicial formation. In the year 2020, 37 judgements were delivered in regard to Azerbaijan, and in all 37 at least one violation was found. The highest number of cases was recorded in regard to the right to fair trial (18), followed by the right to liberty and security (17) and right to respect for private and family life (10). 

Georgia had 532 cases in total before the court. 414 of those cases await its first examination, 99 were communicated, 14 were ordered to a single judge or committee, and 5 were admissible. In total, 18 judgements concerning Georgia were delivered, 7 were communicated to the government, 182 declared inadmissible and 130 allocated to a judicial formation. In the year 2020, 15 judgements were delivered in regard to Georgia, and in 12 of them, at least one violation was found. The highest number of cases was recorded in regard to the right of a fair trial (4), followed by inhuman and degrading treatment (3).
