Turkish MPs Call For Direct Links with Abkhazia

Lawmakers from several Turkish opposition parties have called on the government to restore direct transport links with Abkhazia and recognize Abkhaz passports, arguing that the current restrictions isolate the region and limit humanitarian, family and commercial ties.

During a joint press conference at the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, MPs from the Workers' Party of Türkiye (TİP), DEM Party, DEVA Party, Labour Party (EMEP), New Party, Yeni Yol Party and representatives of the "End the Isolation for Abkhazia" initiative issued a declaration urging Ankara to change its policy toward the breakaway region.

The declaration called on the Turkish government to recognize Abkhaz passports as valid travel documents at Turkish border crossings and restore direct sea and air connections with Abkhazia. Participants argued that these steps could be implemented without changing Türkiye's official position on Georgia's territorial integrity, citing what they described as comparable international practices.

Turkish MPs argued that the current restrictions affect travel for education, healthcare and family reunification, while also limiting economic and cultural exchanges between Türkiye and Abkhazia. They described the measures as humanitarian rather than political and called on the government to begin lifting what they termed the region's isolation.

The initiative builds on a broader coordinated campaign led by the Abkhaz diaspora in Türkiye calling for easier travel and closer contacts with Abkhazia. The Georgian authorities had not publicly responded to the proposal.
