UNM Leadership Change: Khabeishvili Steps Down, Endorses Bokuchava

| News, Politics, Georgia

On June 8, during a briefing, Levan Khabeishvili, the incumbent leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), announced his decision to step down as party leader. At the upcoming UNM congress, he will propose the candidacy of Tina Bokuchava, the UNM Parliamentary faction leader, to replace him.

Khabeishvili cited health reasons and doctors' strong recommendation to avoid intensive work for 2-3 months. He referred to his severe beating by police during the April 30 and May 1 protests against the Foreign Agents Law, stating, "Society is aware of the events that took place a month ago."

Khabeishvili plans to convene the UNM congress to address the leadership change and his candidacy for the party’s Political Council chairmanship. He noted that this role is not routine but allows him to participate in political decision-making. The party's leadership election is scheduled for February 2025.

Tina Bokuchava emphasized the importance of unity within the opposition against Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party. "Today, I will not talk at length about my vision of how we should enter the elections and win these elections, which are so important for our country. As Levan explained, we will have the opportunity to do so shortly, but I will say one thing: without any exaggeration, today the fate of our country is being decided," Bokuchava stated.
