International Community Supports Saakashvili’s Release
Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili's poor health condition has become a central issue. In his daily address to the Ukrainian people on December 19, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the deterioration of the health condition of the imprisoned ex-president and Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili and called on the Georgian authorities to transfer him to one of the clinics in Ukraine, to a European state or America.
"Probably, everyone saw Mikheil Saakashvili's health condition. Therefore, I appeal to the Georgian people and the Georgian authorities to show mercy, especially before Christmas. What is happening to Mikheil [Saakashvili] now is cruelty. This does not suit Georgia. This has to stop. Please make a decision that will save his life", said President Zelenskyy.
Chairman of the "United National Movement," Nika Melia, responded to the call of the President of Ukraine. He hailed the "hero" president of Ukraine for raising the issue of Saakashvili at this difficult time for Ukraine. Melia also noted that the Council of Europe, the USA, and other partner countries addressed the ruling party with similar appeals.
"If we want Europe, the choice is simple; If we want the freedom of the country, the choice is simple; If we want to be on the right side of history - the only choice is to save Mikheil Saakashvili's life... In the new year, we must take a step forward, towards Europe, and not back, towards the Russian darkness," he added.
“It sounds terrible, but this birthday may be the last in the life of Mikheil Saakashvili," – the mayor of Lviv, Andrii Sadovyi, wrote on the social network. According to him, the third president of Georgia and a citizen of Ukraine has been in prison for more than a year. It is possible to draw conclusions about the conditions of his stay there from the photos and videos that depict his appearance and condition.
Moldova joined Zelenskyy's call to the Georgian authorities to allow Mikheil Saakashvili to go abroad for treatment, - the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, commented. "Worried about Saakashvili's life-threatening complications stemming from his detention conditions. Moldova joins Zelenskyy's call to the Georgian government to allow the former president to go abroad for treatment to safeguard his health," – Sandu wrote on Twitter.
In response to Zelenskyy's call, Mamuka Mdinaradze, the chairman of the parliamentary faction of "Georgian Dream," said that Saakashvili returned to Georgia in 2021 through a special operation, and "today, the authors of the special operation secured a statement from the president of Ukraine in favor of the executor of the special operation."
"This is a simple assessment. When we talk about joining the war being one of the main goals of this special operation, we are not saying it by chance, we are saving the facts," said Mdinaradze. According to him, "in line with this statement, we can consider the statement of a number of high-ranking officials of Ukraine that today there are no war people in the government of Georgia, and Mikheil Saakashvili would do that [get involved in the war in Georgia]." Mdinaradze also emphasized that such statements are not accidental and that President Zelenskyy's statement should also be evaluated in this context.
Later, speaking to journalists, the chairman of "Georgian Dream," Irakli Kobakhidze, said that "those who brought Saakashvili to Georgia are the same people who are active to release him. They have a kind of responsibility to Saakashvili" and "Zelenskyy's statement only confirmed all this." "Ukrainian authorities were directly involved in the special operation to send Saakashvili to Georgia, which fortunately failed," he added.
