144 Azerbaijanis returned to their homeland from the Dagestan camp

144 Azerbaijanis left the Ogonyok camp in the Kaitag district of Dagestan, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said. In addition to these former camp inhabitants, about 500 people are expected to cross the Russian-Azerbaijani border in Dagestan.

Azerbaijani citizens wishing to return to Azerbaijan are accommodated at the Ogonyok children's camp in the Kaitag region of Dagestan. From late January to early April, camp residents were no longer regularly transported to Azerbaijan, but during this period regular flights with Azerbaijan resumed. On July 1, the Azerbaijani side received all the inhabitants of the temporary accommodation centre in Dagestan, where they were expecting to return to their homeland. On August 28, about 60 people were expected to be sent home from the camp.

The problem of returning from Russia to their homeland arose in April 2020, when the border closed due to the pandemic. In the summer, a temporary accommodation centre was opened near Kullar, camp residents and newly arriving Azerbaijanis were sent home in groups on Tuesdays through the border checkpoint.

There are 12 people in the temporary accommodation centre for Azerbaijanis in the Ogonyok camp. The last departure from the camp was on September 6-7, 144 citizens of Azerbaijan left, an employee of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's Department for Dagestan stated.

On September 26, a delegation of Azerbaijani officials is to arrive in Dagestan. However, the meeting discussion points have not yet been specified. Russian citizens wishing to cross the Russian-Azerbaijani border from Azerbaijan do not face any difficulties. However, Russian citizens must have negative PCR tests when crossing the border, he added.
