A new scandal in Georgia involving former PM Ivanishvili
Davit Arakhamia, chairman of the Servant of the People's faction of the Ukrainian parliament, criticised the Georgian government. "Ukrainians and Georgians have always been and will always be brotherly peoples. But this does not apply to the country's ruling elite," he told RBC-Ukraine.
According to Arakhamia, the Georgian government is pursuing a pro-Russian policy, which is seen by the ruling party trying to help the occupier country to avoid sanctions. At the same time, according to Arakhamia, the Georgian government refrains from openly and clearly declaring Russia as an aggressor.
Arakhamia also said that the pro-Russian attitudes of the Georgian government are confirmed by Bidzina Ivanishvili's close ties with the Russian political elite. He called on the EU and the US leadership to impose personal sanctions on Ivanishvili. "Georgians are fighting for Ukraine in the war, Georgian celebrities even filmed videos in support of us before February 24. They support Ukraine and our victory in the war. But this does not apply to the Georgian government.” Related to the Russian political elite, the recently published "Ivanishvili's Records" confirm these connections. “Today, Ivanishvili has become a Georgian Yanukovych. EU and US leadership are [considering] imposing personal sanctions on Ivanishvili and his assets in the West. No one should escape responsibility - neither the occupiers nor those who help them," Arakhamia said.
A recording was leaked through the Georgian media, allegedly showing the conversation between Ivanishvili and the Russian oligarch, Vladimir Yevtushenkov. The recording shows two alleged conversations at different times, Ivanishvili allegedly told Yevtushenkov that "the situation is unfavourable, but endurance is needed, what can I do?"
The Georgian government reacted swiftly. Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party, called the audio recording "nonsense." "One does not know whether it is authentic or not. We have no way to verify this. It is also interesting what the source was, which naturally could not be the Georgian side. I wonder if the Russian side was the source for TV Pirveli. Either way, the case concerns one of the Russian businessmen who is repressed by the Russian authorities. If anyone can recall us from the repressed Russian businessmen after Khadarkovsky, it is this particular Russian businessman.”
When personal talk at such times, they claim, is broadcast on television, it speaks to their values and standards. "This is a tragic event with a smile, and it characterises the televisions that belong to the war party, the National Movement," Kobakhidze said.
"Ivanishvili's regime is a soft satellite of Putin's evil empire," said Giga Bokeria, chairman of European Georgia. According to Giga Bokeria, the fact that Georgia has a regime controlled by Bidzina Ivanishvili today is the toughest sanction for the country. "If we take Ivanishvili's statements about his ties to Putin's entourage with the world in which he established himself, it is the result of the savage Moscow entourage of the 1990s. They are the people who are now close to Putin from the same world, they and Ivanishvili grew up together. Therefore, it is absolutely natural that he wanders in this society. The behaviour of his regime during this critical period for our country proves that Ivanishvili's regime is a soft satellite of Putin's evil empire. All the oligarchs in Putin's entourage have one major problem - the free world is being sanctioned by Putin's evil empire, they are trying to avoid those sanctions, and this time an oligarch who grew up with them, who has taken over the country, will try to help the oligarchs avoid sanctions. The actions of the Ivanishvili regime, his past and public statements without any record confirm the validity of this suspicion. As for the issue of sanctions, I do not make any predictions, it is not the intention of the society and the opposition to impose sanctions on anyone, but the fact that we have a regime controlled by Ivanishvili is the toughest sanction for our country. If the situation goes too far, for which there are reasonable doubts, then the damage will be even greater for our country, we look at the dire situation of all those who are close to the Putin regime, Ivanishvili is also part of this system,” said Bokeria.
UNM Secretary General Petre Tsiskarishvili made a special statement: "Evtushenkov is the head of the production company of the direct competitor of the Turkish "Bayraktar." Bidzina Ivanishvili had business talks with this person a month and a half ago," Petre Tsiskarishvili said. The politician recalled the recent statement of the intelligence service of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine that the Russians are establishing a channel for the smuggling of sanctioned goods through the territory of Georgia. Tsiskarishvili also demanded sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili and Davit Khidasheli.
