Accusation from Armenia regarding violation of ceasefire on the border and response from Baku
On 29 May, the Armenian MFA published a statement on the violation of the ceasefire regime of the Azerbaijani armed forces on May 28th.
“We strongly condemn the gross violation by the Azerbaijani armed forces of the ceasefire regime in the south-eastern direction of the Armenian border on May 28th, as a result of which a serviceman of the Armenian Armed Forces, David Vardanyan, was killed. We express our deepest condolences and support to the family members and relatives of the deceased soldier,” message said.
“In this regard, we recall that since May 2021, units of the Azerbaijani armed forces have illegally invaded the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia in the Sotk-Khoznavar section and occupied an area of more than 45 square kilometres,” it added.
“The provocations and incidents that took place on May 28th and earlier, as well as regular violations of the ceasefire regime, once again justify the need for a mirror withdrawal of troops from the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the deployment of an observation mission on the border, which the Armenian side has repeatedly stated,” Armenian MFA stated. “Considering also that the Commission on Delimitation and Security of the Borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan has already begun its work, this incident should be investigated and assessed by the Commission,” messaged added.
“At the same time, we remind you that the consequences of the previous gross violation of the ceasefire established by the statement of November 9th, 2020, as a result of which the Azerbaijani armed forces invaded the village of Parukh in Nagorno-Karabakh, located in the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping forces, have not yet been eliminated,” Armenian MFA said.
“We consider it important that the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the CSTO, the European Union and the entire international community give an appropriate and targeted assessment of Azerbaijan's provocative actions, statements, [and] aggressive rhetoric aimed at undermining peacekeeping efforts in the South Caucasus.
We call on the leadership of Azerbaijan to refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, to fulfil the obligations to establish stability and security in the region, taken by tripartite statements and following the results of the Brussels meetings,” message concluded
The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry stated, "[more] misinformation spread in the Armenian media about the wounding of David Vardanyan, a serviceman of the opposite side, allegedly opened by units of our Aamy on the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border is false and does not reflect the truth. The Armenian Defence Ministry claims that this morning the Azerbaijani army violated the ceasefire in the south-eastern direction of the state border. One Armenian serviceman was reportedly injured as a result of the ceasefire violation,” message from Azerbaijani side underlined.
“We categorically reject the statement of the Armenian Foreign Ministry dated May 28th, 2022, which allegedly violated the ceasefire by the Azerbaijani side, as well as completely baseless allegations against Azerbaijan," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan stated that "On May 28th, 2022, the Armenian media reported that one serviceman of the Armenian armed forces was seriously injured as a result of the alleged violation of the ceasefire by the Azerbaijani side on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. In this regard, we officially state that this information is not true and does not reflect reality."
“As a result of observations made by our units, drunken [disorderliness] of servicemen at the location of the unit of the Armenian Armed Forces, 1 shot was heard inside the tent at 10:37, 8 minutes later - at 10:45, and 2 more shots were heard later. One person was evacuated from the tent. Observation [of] photos [and] video and analysis of other materials carried out at that time show that the incident took place among the Armenian servicemen,” State Border Service of Azerbaijan stated. SBS also published photos, video and analysis of other materials after several hours.
