Ararat Mirzoyan: "Baku Responded to Yerevan's Proposals on Peace Treaty"
On February 7, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan Armenia stated that Armenia recently received another proposal from Azerbaijan regarding signing a peace treaty.
"Yerevan is currently studying these proposals," the head of the Armenian diplomacy noted. "We were supposed to meet in Moscow with the foreign ministers of Russia and Azerbaijan; however, the Armenian side postponed its participation due to blocking the Lachin corridor. But despite this, we conveyed our proposals to the Azerbaijani side and recently received a response and new proposals on a peace treaty from Baku," Mirzoyan added.
According to him, the negotiation process has not stopped; it continues, although not as smoothly as they would like. "The atmosphere of Armenian phobia in Baku also impedes these negotiations," Mirzoyan emphasized. "In addition, the aggressive actions of Azerbaijan, including the invasion of the sovereign territory of Armenia and the occupation of these territories, as well as the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, are an obstacle to a settlement," he added.
Minister said, "Nevertheless, the Armenian side is determined to advance the peace agenda." Mirzoyan summarized Yerevan's plans to redouble its efforts to strengthen long-term peace in the region.
Azerbaijan responds
On February 8, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry was asked, "Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who was on a visit to Germany on February 7, 2023, stated that Azerbaijan obstructed the negotiation process, but despite this, Armenia is committed to the peace process and considered the proposals for a peace agreement presented by Azerbaijan a few days ago. What do you think about this statement?"
Aykhan Hajizada, the head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, answered: "First of all, let's note that the proposals referred to by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan were presented by Azerbaijan, not a few days ago, but 15 days ago." "At the same time, as can be seen from this statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, the Armenian side allows manipulation of the peace agreement negotiation process and aims to confuse the international community by presenting itself as a constructive party," he added.
"As it is known, the Armenian side violated the agreed course of the negotiation process on the peace agreement and refused the negotiations in December last year. Now, instead of returning to peace talks, it is creating artificial obstacles to the process. Unlike Armenia, Azerbaijan is in favor of conducting negotiations on the text of the peace agreement in a short period and is always ready for it," the official stated.
