Armed Attack on Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran; Baku Accuses Iran of Spreading Lies
On January 27, at about 8:30 AM (Baku time), an armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran took place. Azerbaijani government-controlled media blames Iran and accuses the Iranian side of conducting a terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran. According to the information received by Caliber.az, the Iranian side, trying to cover its tracks and distract everybody's attention, mentions the alleged Armenian, which is an outright lie and an attempt to mislead the Azerbaijani public.
Also, many Azerbaijani police officers now protect the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan from attacks. The police do not allow people to approach the embassy's front door while Azerbaijani people are outraged by the attack. The attack also sparked harsh criticism from Azerbaijani MPs and other officials, who blamed Iran for “standing behind the attack”.
According to the information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the attacker armed with a Kalashnikov rifle killed the head of the security service. Two security guards of the embassy were also injured while preventing the attack. Their condition is satisfactory.
"Currently, an investigation is underway into this treacherous attack," the ministry said.

The Azerbaijani side will use all the opportunities provided by the relevant international mechanisms to ensure that the culprits are identified and receive a decent punishment. Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan
After the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, numerous journalists and activists in Azerbaijan gathered in front of the Iranian Embassy in Baku. Even though the journalists waited for hours, the representative of the Iranian Embassy did not appear in front of them and make a statement. According to him, Hikmat Babaoğlu, the Coordinator of Parliamentarians of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, made a statement to journalists in front of the Iranian embassy building.
He said that the terrorist incident should be condemned. "Undoubtedly, the Iranian state must understand its responsibility and explain the incident clearly, logically, and satisfactorily. Some time ago, a similar incident happened against the Azerbaijani embassy in Great Britain. Statements were made that would reduce this issue to a household level. They linked it with radical groups of Iranian origin. But this was not a satisfactory explanation. Now the incident must find its own clear and logical explanation," he said.
Babaoğlu emphasized, "Moreover, this incident should be considered as an incident committed not only against the Azerbaijani embassy but against Azerbaijan as a whole because the embassy of each country in another country is considered the territory of that country. I think that because there is no public trust in the official statements of Iran in Azerbaijan, the experts of Azerbaijan should also be involved in the process of investigating and conducting the investigation of the terrorist incident so that we have clear ideas about why and how the incident happened."
It is important to note that Hikmat Babaoğlu is one of the influential politicians in Azerbaijani politics and especially in the ruling team.
