Armenia and Russia Exchange Harsh Statements After Incident on Hakari Bridge

| News, Politics, Armenia

During a briefing on June 21, Maria Zakharova, the Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, said that the incident on the Hakari bridge arose from the lack of delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

She said that Moscow has repeatedly called for the launch of a bilateral commission on border delimitation. According to Zakharova, Moscow is ready to help determine the border crossing procedure. The Spokeswoman also reacted to the accusations leveled by Armenia against the Russian peacekeepers. Zakharova emphasized that these accusations are groundless. "We would strongly recommend toning the rhetoric about this in the media. "The peacekeepers continue to work closely with the parties to normalize the situation," she added.

Maria Zakharova responded to the retort of one of the journalists that the peacekeepers take sides. She said the peacekeepers must solve the problems in contact with both parties. Zakharova also said that Baku should not hold the people of Karabakh hostage to disagreements with Yerevan: "We urge Yerevan not to exclude itself from the tripartite format. The Idleness of this format has a detrimental effect on the situation in the region and leads to escalation. We call on Baku to fully open the corridor for humanitarian purposes and not to hold the people of Karabakh hostage to political differences with Yerevan."

In response on the evening of June 22, Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ani Badalyan said that the June 15 incident did not take place in the Lachin corridor, as Maria Zakharova noted earlier, but on the sovereign territory of Armenia, on the Armenian side of the Hakari bridge.

"There is a clear contradiction in the interpretation of the Russian side. If, due to the lack of delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, it is impossible to say exactly where the borderline passes, and this is the reason for the ongoing problems, as the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry claims, then the question arises: on what basis and on what basis on June 15 exactly on this On the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, on this side of the bridge, was the Azerbaijani flag erected?", the Press Secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry said.

In this regard, official Yerevan drew attention to the fact that the thesis about the non-delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is regularly repeated verbatim by the Azerbaijani side when carrying out aggressive actions against the borders of Armenia and invading its sovereign territory.

"It is not clear why Russian peacekeepers took part in that operation of Azerbaijan when both the purpose and even the place of the operation were not within the scope of the functions and responsibilities of the peacekeepers. We remind you that the only function related to Russian peacekeepers was to keep under control the Lachin corridor 5 kilometers wide," Badalyan added.

"In conclusion, we would like to call on the parties that signed the tripartite statement of November 9, 2020, and other tripartite statements by the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan, instead of looking for excuses, to fulfill their obligations strictly," the Armenian Foreign Ministry said.

Notably, on June 15, a shootout took place near the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) reported that its border guards intervened and prevented a group of Azerbaijani servicemen stationed at the checkpoint from advancing into Armenian territory and placing an Azerbaijani flag there. Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry responded that they intended to hoist the flag on a bridge within the Lachin corridor and not to cross into Armenian territory. They accused Yerevan of deliberately obstructing the checkpoint's operation.
