Armenia Prepares for EU Aid Program, Eyes Closer Trade Links with EU
Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan underscored the importance of strengthening Armenian commercial attachés’ roles within the EU to promote Armenian products in European markets better.
During the 2025 state budget discussion, MP Arman Yeghoyan, head of the parliamentary committee on European integration, inquired if Hovhannisyan saw a need for broader engagement from these attachés, citing Georgia’s sector-specific approach. Hovhannisyan stressed the strategic importance of Armenia’s economic attaché in Brussels and noted plans to extend this representation to countries like France, Germany, and the Netherlands, with current efforts focused on expanding necessary human resources.
“It’s more of an issue of supplementing it. We have decisions on establishing the relevant positions. The issue pertains to supplementing them, which requires human resources, and we are working in that direction,” Hovhannisyan noted.
Paruyr Hovhannisyan also announced that the European Peace Facility will begin providing aid to Armenia on November 18. Speaking at a parliamentary committee session, he confirmed that preparatory work for the aid program is underway. In July 2024, the European Union decided to allocate support to Armenia under this facility for the first time, with an assistance package valued at €10 million.
Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized this year’s significant strides in EU-Armenia relations, citing the initiation of the visa liberalization dialogue and recent agreements with Europol and Eurojust. The Armenia-EU partnership agenda, currently being finalized, is expected to influence the scope of bilateral initiatives planned for 2025.
“All these steps, of course, will have an impact in terms of the planned work in 2025,” he added.
