Armenia rejects Turkey's border proposal
Armenia has categorically rejected the issue of re-demarcating the border with Turkey, said the head of the parliamentary commission on foreign relations, MP from the ruling Civil Contract party, Eduard Aghajanyan.
“In the short term, we do not see Turkey's readiness to take steps forward. Turkey has not sent positive signals related to specific steps,” the pro-government parliamentarian said. When asked by an online publication what could be Ankara's goal of involving borders in the process of normalising relations with Yerevan, Aghajanyan replied that it is beneficial for Turkey to be in this dialogue. The Armenian MP also commented on the recent statement by the head of Turkish diplomacy Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on the re-demarcation of the border with Armenia. According to Aghajanyan, such a hint was made during the talks between the special representatives of Turkey and Armenia, but the Armenian side categorically rejected it. Aghajanyan stressed that "there is nothing to do here, the borders were demarcated during the Soviet era."
Earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry reacted to the statement of Çavuşoğlu on reaching an agreement on the re-demarcation of the Armenian-Turkish border. “There are no discussions or agreements regarding the re-demarcation of the Armenian-Turkish border. There is no such issue on the agenda,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Vahan Hunanyan.
