During a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on the sidelines of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Sochi on 7 June, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Russian business is doing well in Armenia and that there is a positive trend in Russian-Armenian relations.
"Last year we discussed how to intensify economic relations. Looking at the results, I can say that much of what we agreed on has already been implemented, and I am very happy about this. There is a fairly high level of investment activity, mutual trade is growing, and this helps the Armenian economy a lot, we have very good indicators of economic activity," Pashinyan said.
Mishustin, for his part, noted a record growth of mutual trade between Russia and Armenia in January-April this year by 96% on an annual basis. "More than 4,500 companies with Russian capital are successfully operating in Armenia, and their accumulated investments exceed 46% of the total volume of foreign investments in the republic's economy," the Russian Prime Minister recalled.
"We are interested in launching new joint projects in the energy sector, mining, digitalisation and the agro-industrial complex. Russian companies are ready to offer advanced solutions in areas such as e-government, smart and safe cities, and transport infrastructure. There are a number of projects. We pay a lot of attention to interregional cooperation with Armenia. There are now about 70 subjects of the Russian Federation working together. Direct links are being established between the leaders of the regions and the Armenian subjects. Last year, 24 business missions were organised in Armenia with the participation of representatives of Russian regions. Of course, it is important to expand such contacts and create new cooperative ties," Mishustin stressed.
In addition, Pashinyan noted that significant progress was made at a recent meeting of the trilateral working group on unblocking transport communications in the South Caucasus in Moscow.
"I would like to reiterate the readiness of the Republic of Armenia to open regional economic and transport communications within the framework of the principles of sovereignty and jurisdiction of the parties through which these communications pass. This applies to the communications mentioned in the 9th paragraph of the Tripartite Declaration [of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan of 9 November 2000]. I hope that we will be able to make concrete decisions," Pashinyan added.
Pashinyan stressed that the Armenian side has made concrete proposals and hopes that they will be accepted. "In principle, these are not our proposals, these are compromise solutions that we have developed over the past two years," the Prime Minister added.
Mikhail Mishustin, for his part, pointed out that in accordance with the agreements between the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, systematic work is underway to unblock economic and transport links in the Transcaucasus. The creation of new infrastructure routes is in the interests of all states in the region, he stressed.
