Armenian Parliament Discusses Energy Relations with Iran

| News, Politics, Armenia

During the discussion in the legislative body of the republic of the prospects for developing Armenian-Iranian trade and economic relations, Vagharshak Hakobyan, the Deputy Chairman of the Armenian Parliament Commission on Regional and Eurasian Integration, stated that every year, 365 million cubic meters of gas are imported to Armenia from Iran within the framework of the trade formula gas in exchange for electricity.

"There are agreements between the two countries to increase the volume of supplies of blue fuel," he added. Hakobyan noted that over the past three years, the volume of mutual trade between Armenia and Iran has increased, showing a dynamic growth trend. It was noted that the third high-voltage power transmission line between Armenia and Iran under construction is strategically important since it will significantly increase the volume of electricity supplies to the Islamic Republic.

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Hakob Vardanyan, in turn, touched upon the possibilities of using the full capacity of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline. He says the pipeline's throughput capacity is 2.3 billion cubic meters per year. However, Armenia only used up to 500 million cubic meters (and in recent years, even less, around 365 million cubic meters).

Earlier, it was reported that Iran would double the natural gas supply to Armenia as part of an expanded gas-for-electricity deal valid until March 2031. It is expected that under the new agreement, gas supplies from Iran to Armenia will double, reaching 2 million cubic meters daily. Since May 15, 2009, Armenia has received gas from Iran through a pipeline. Under the agreement, gas in exchange for electricity is processed on Armenian territory into electricity intended for export to Iran at the rate of 3 kWh per 1 cubic meter of natural gas.
