Armenian PM Engages in Bilateral and Multilateral Talks Within Munich Security Conference
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended the opening ceremony of the Munich Security Conference.
Numerous presidents, heads of government, foreign ministers, and figures such as UN Secretary-General António Guterres, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, OSCE Secretary-General Helga Schmid, and many others attend the conference. As part of the agenda, Nikol Pashinyan had several bilateral meetings scheduled.
As the PM Press Office reported, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Nikol Pashinyan met with Ian Borg, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta. They discussed developments in the South Caucasus region, with Prime Minister Pashinyan outlining Armenia’s principles regarding normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Both parties emphasized the importance of effectively utilizing the OSCE's tools and mandate to enhance regional stability and security in the South Caucasus. The meeting likely focused on exploring avenues for cooperation and dialogue within the framework of the OSCE to address ongoing challenges in the region.
During the Munich Security Conference, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a meeting to discuss various bilateral and regional issues. In his opening remarks, PM Pashinyan expressed appreciation for the positive dynamics in bilateral relations between Armenia and the United States. He highlighted the effective partnership established, particularly noting the initiation of the Strategic Dialogue in 2019. Pashinyan underscored the importance of addressing a wide range of issues during their upcoming meeting to enhance the effectiveness of their dialogue. Additionally, he brought attention to the recent escalation of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, expressing the need to discuss this matter.
In his turn, Antony Blinken noted: “It is nice to meet you today, Mr. Pashinyan. Armenia is a very valuable partner for the United States, and we appreciate its commitment to lasting peace. We can also strengthen the ties between our countries in all directions. We have discussed all this with Prime Minister Pashinyan.”
During their meeting, the Armenian PM and US Secretary of State also addressed key topics concerning Armenia-US relations. They highlighted the ongoing development of strategic dialogue between the two countries and emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum. Additionally, the leaders discussed the process of normalizing Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.
Antony Blinken underscored the United States’ commitment to furthering its involvement in the negotiation and peace process and expressed optimism about the prospect of ongoing dialogue.
Further, the US Secretary of State described his meeting with Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan in Munich as “productive.”
“Had a productive conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan today on how we can support the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and ways we can continue to strengthen our bilateral relationship,” he posted on X.
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held discussions during the Munich Security Conference, covering topics pertinent to the Armenia-Germany bilateral agenda. Additionally, they touched upon the ongoing process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Pashinyan commended Chancellor Scholz for supporting dialogue, peace, and stability in the South Caucasus region, reaffirming Armenia's dedication to the peace process. Chancellor Scholz expressed readiness to persist in endeavors aimed at fostering peace and dialogue in the region, underscoring the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
This was followed by a tripartite talk between Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as the Armenian government press release reported. The discussion encompassed the normalization process of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations and initiatives to foster regional peace and stability. Both parties agreed to continue efforts toward advancing the peace treaty.
“Germany and Europe are ready to support the peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan within their capabilities. I have confirmed this during the discussions with both countries. It’s good that both sides have agreed to resolve open issues without new violence,” Scholz posted on X following the talks.
Armenia’s PM Nikol Pashinyan also met with Odile Renaud-Basso, the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). During their meeting, PM Nikol Pashinyan highlighted the strong and productive collaboration established between the Armenian government and the EBRD. He underscored that many programs across various sectors are being successfully implemented in Armenia as a result of this cooperation, contributing significantly to the stability and growth of the country’s economy.
Odile Renaud-Basso expressed her satisfaction with the EBRD and Armenian government cooperation. She noted that their joint initiatives continuously grow and expand into new areas.
