Azerbaijan and Armenia Address Possible Brussel and Chișinău Meetings

On May 11, while answering a question about the Brussels and Chișinău meetings between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Aykhan Hajizada, the head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, said that there is still no final agreement on Azerbaijan's participation in the Chișinău meeting.

Hajizada said that the Azerbaijani side agreed to the Brussels meeting, which did not take place last year and was planned to be resumed in May with the initiative and participation of the President of the Council of the European Union (EU) Charles Michel.

"At the same time, it was proposed to hold a meeting between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia within the framework of the next meeting of the European Political Community in Chișinău with the participation of the French President and the Chancellor of Germany. The Azerbaijani side can participate in the informal meeting in Chișinău, provided that the Azerbaijani side does not replace the Brussels format and does not change this format. Simultaneously, taking into account the lack of detailed information on the details of the said meeting, the final agreement on participation in the Chișinău meeting is not yet available," the official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to him, last year, several meetings were held in Brussels between the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, with the mediation of the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel. "In December, the Armenian side refused to participate in the meeting with the same format in Brussels, thereby obstructing the process," he noted.

At the government meeting on May 11, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in turn, said that he had not changed his mind to visit Brussels for negotiations on May 14. "If I go to Brussels, as I suppose, I want to answer the question that will be asked by certain forces. What is the probability of signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan on Sunday [May 14]? Unfortunately, this possibility is very small because the draft bilateral agreement on establishing peace and interstate relations is still very preliminary, and it is too early to talk about its signing," Pashinyan said.
