Azerbaijan Appeals to International Court of Justice to Oblige Armenia to Stop Mining Azerbaijani Territories
On January 5, Azerbaijan appealed to the International Court of Justice to request that Armenia stop mining Azerbaijani territories and use the Lachin road to transfer mines to the Karabakh, the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reported.
"In response to the deliberate violation of human rights by Armenia against Azerbaijanis, the Azerbaijani side submitted a second appeal to the International Court of Justice in order to take urgent measures within the framework of the international convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination," the statement said. It claims that there is new evidence that Armenia continues to place mines in Azerbaijani territories and booby traps in houses starting from 2021.
"These mines and booby traps are placed in settlements from where Azerbaijanis were expelled 30 years ago as a result of their occupation by Armenia, or close to them, which prevents the families of internally displaced persons from returning to their homes," the message emphasized. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more than 2.7 thousand mines produced in Armenia in 2021 have been found in Azerbaijan since August 2022, and there is evidence that they were installed after the signing of the tripartite statement of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia on November 9, 2020.
"Azerbaijan petitioned the International Court of Justice, requesting that Armenia immediately take the necessary steps to ensure the prompt, safe, and effective clearance of mines from areas where civilians will return, refrain from placing mines and other explosives on civilian territories, and discontinue use of the Lachin road," the message concluded.
