Azerbaijan Denies Entry to OSCE Election Observer Nick Gugger

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

Nick Gugger, a short-term observer of the election mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), was not allowed to come to Azerbaijan. Several local and foreign media report that Nick Guger was denied entry into Azerbaijan upon arriving at Baku airport. According to social media, the police confiscated the Swiss citizen's passport and kept him at the airport for three hours. Afterward, he was sent on a flight to Istanbul.

The OSCE Bureau of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights confirmed the information. It was reported that the exact cause of the incident is unknown. "But we appealed to the authorities, and we are waiting for a response," Katja Andrush, the Press Secretary of the OSCE Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Bureau, said. "The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights does not play a role in making a decision on the observer's possible entry into the country to participate in the observation mission. This is a bilateral issue between the sending state and the host country," the press secretary added.

Notably, Gugger had previously heavily criticized Azerbaijan for the military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
