Azerbaijan Outraged Over France's Military Aid to Armenia

| News, Politics, Armenia, Azerbaijan

According to the information of Caliber.az, the Azerbaijani publication associated with the Azerbaijani government, the French military equipment intended for Armenia, namely Bastion armored personnel carriers, was delivered through Georgia.

According to the publication, on November 12, the French multipurpose armored vehicle Bastion manufactured by Acmat and its components entered the Georgia port of Poti. The publication also claims that the French company ARQUUS is the sender of the equipment.

In response to the delivery of military equipment by France to Armenia, Aykhan Hajizada, the Spokesperson of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, said that Armenia and France should end the armament and militarization policy in the region and finally understand that there is no alternative to peace and stability in the region. "We call upon the international community to refrain from delivering weapons and creating conditions for such a delivery to Armenia, which is known as a country with its aggressive policy and actions, and to end and condemn such illegitimate activities that prevent the establishment of peace and prosperity in the region," the spokesperson said.

Moreover, he added that the transfer of the French military equipment would serve to reinforce the military capabilities and thus the destructive actions of Armenia, as a country that kept certain parts of the territories of Azerbaijan under occupation for almost 30 years and still does not refrain from the aggressive policy and rhetorics. He noted that these steps by France, which presents itself as an advocate of international law and a country supporting peace and stability in the region, put under serious question the efforts for normalization of relations based on the respect for and recognition of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international borders of countries in the region, thus serving to destabilization of the situation.

Furthermore, Elchin Amirbayov, the Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments, noted that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is abusing the relationship between his country and France, as well as its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. "Now the issue is over. We restored our pride. We also restored historical justice. While the revanchist sentiment is strongest among Armenia's political opposition, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan dabbles in it as well," Amirbayov argued. "The first step which would send us a signal [that Armenia has given up revanchism] would be a clear expression by Pashinyan - not only in declarations but in real actions - that he does not consider the outcome of the latest military confrontation as something that he has to contest," Amirbayov added. "In the first war between the two sides, over 600,000 ethnic Azerbaijanis were displaced from the territories that Armenians seized. The Azerbaijani government is now spending billions on demining and rebuilding those areas to make them ready for the return of their former residents. That should serve as a unifying force for Azerbaijanis now," the official noted. "I think now the idea of Azerbaijan, the national idea which the government will pursue, would be to try to consolidate peace, try to live as a country which is independent, but which has never had a chance to live in possession of all of its territories," he emphasized.

Notably, Armenia and France signed an agreement on defense cooperation on October 23.
