Azerbaijan Ready for 'Plan B' for Zangezur Corridor Amid Stalled Talks with Armenia

In an interview with The Guardian on December 28, Elchin Amirbayov, the Azerbaijani Presidential Representative for Special Assignments, noted that after handing over the latest version of the peace agreement to the Armenian side last week, Baku now expects Yerevan to respond to its proposals.

"What is important to understand is that at this crucial stage in negotiations, where apparently we're not that far away from the final agreement, [is that] we do need a result-oriented exercise," he stated. Amirbayov noted that after handing over the latest version of the peace agreement to the Armenian side last week, Baku now expects Yerevan to respond to its proposals. According to him, Armenia must fully realize the benefits of peace with Azerbaijan and definitively abandon any harmful illusions and detrimental manipulations aimed at disrupting the peace process and returning to military confrontation with our country.

"Regarding the provision of transport communication between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, Baku considers this issue not only in creating an alternative route connecting China with Europe through the Middle Corridor but also as an important element of ensuring its national security. In this sense, as events 'on the ground' show, Baku, after three years of futile waiting for a clear response from Armenia, is not inclined to waste more time. If Armenia is unable to understand its benefit in creating the Zangezur Corridor, if it continues to spread the absurd narrative of impending aggression against it by Azerbaijan and intends to remain a regional dead end, then Azerbaijan is moving to concrete actions and begins the implementation of the so-called 'Plan B,' giving preference to creating the aforementioned transport communication through the territory of neighboring Iran," Amirbayov emphasized.
