Azerbaijan Sends Note to Russia After Remarks of Russian MP

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On April 19, Oleg Matveychev, the Deputy Chairman of the Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Committee of the Russian State Duma, claimed in an interview with the Rusarminfo agency that Turkey and Azerbaijan are dissatisfied with the tripartite declaration reached between Moscow, Baku, and Yerevan in 2020, and therefore are trying to rekindle the conflict: "Turkey, like Azerbaijan, is in favor of the continuation of this conflict, and they commit provocations for this purpose. They are not satisfied with the agreements reached, they are not satisfied with the end of the conflict. They thought they could get everything, but they had to settle with Russia."

Metveychev claimed that this is why they criticize Aliyev and Erdoğan in their own countries. According to him, Iran cannot do anything as a regional player, and the Americans and others are trying to keep the hotbed of tension in the South Caucasus to divert Russia's attention from the Ukraine conflict. He said that Russia is currently the only country in the world interested in stopping this conflict, while "Turkey and Azerbaijan are trying to cause various incidents and not implement the agreements so that Armenia or Russia withdraw from this agreement and restore the status of war."

On April 20, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Russia issued a protest note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. The reason for this was the statement made by Oleg Matveychev. In the note of the Embassy, several opinions expressed by the deputy from the ruling "United Russia" party regarding Azerbaijan and Turkey are called unacceptable.

It was also stated that such statements of the representative of the Russian ruling party overshadow the mediation of Russia, which supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and makes efforts for the normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations.
