Azerbaijan Summons EU Ambassador in Response to European Parliament's Resolution

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On October 25, Peter Michalko, the European Union Ambassador to Azerbaijan, was summoned to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he received a formal protest note from the government. This protest was issued in response to the European Parliament’s recent resolution critical of Azerbaijan, adopted on October 24. During the meeting, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned both the resolution itself and statements made by the EU Commissioner during European Parliament discussions.

The Ministry expressed concern that recent actions by EU institutions suggest a broader campaign to discredit Azerbaijan, alleging that these moves infringe upon Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and constitute unwarranted interference in its internal affairs. The Ministry further warned that such measures could embolden revanchist sentiments in Armenia, potentially obstructing peace efforts in the region.

The statement emphasized that Azerbaijan bases its relationship with the EU on principles of international law, mutual respect, equality, and shared interests, urging the EU to adhere strictly to these core tenets. The Ministry called on the EU to refrain from actions that, in Azerbaijan’s view, violate its sovereignty, disrupt regional stability, and constitute interference in domestic matters.
