Azerbaijan Transfers Non-Aligned Movement Leadership to Uganda

During his visit to Uganda for the 19th summit meeting of the heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement on January 18, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of Uganda. 

Bayramov congratulated President Museveni on Uganda's assumption of the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement from Azerbaijan and expressed Azerbaijan's readiness to share its chairmanship experience with Uganda. The two leaders discussed various aspects of political relations between the two nations, expressing satisfaction with the current level of relations. The importance of continued coordination and mutual support on important issues at bilateral and multilateral levels, including within the UN and the Non-Aligned Movement, was emphasized. Both sides agreed on the development of bilateral relations, aiming to intensify contacts and business relations in economic, social, and humanitarian spheres. "During the meeting, Minister Bayramov briefed President Museveni on Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan, the challenges of refugees and internally displaced persons, and provided detailed information about the historical context of the past conflict, the factors leading to the 44-day Patriotic War, and the subsequent anti-terrorist measures. The current situation in the region in the post-conflict period was also discussed," the report added.

On January 19, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov participated and spoke at the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Kampala, Uganda. In his capacity as the chairman of the National Assembly at the Summit, Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan's successful chairmanship over the past four years. He discussed the measures taken to increase the effectiveness of the Movement, emphasizing the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and Azerbaijan's initiatives, including the proposal for a special session of the UN General Assembly on combating the pandemic. Bayramov noted the extension of Azerbaijan's chairmanship for an additional year in 2022, emphasizing the trust and confidence shown by member countries. He highlighted the institutional development of the National Assembly, including the establishment of the Movement's Parliamentary Network and Youth Organization and the foundation of the Women's Platform. Azerbaijan's efforts to increase the number of Movement members, enhance cooperation with international organizations, and support member states in international organizations were also underscored.

Additionally, on the same day, Minister Bayramov met with Riyad Al-Maliki, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Palestinians Living Abroad of the State of Palestine, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of India. Discussions included current cooperation agendas, regional situations, and the importance of political consultations to explore bilateral potential. Bayramov emphasized Azerbaijan's support for the two-state solution to the Palestinian issue and informed about the $2 million assistance provided to Palestine by Azerbaijan through the UN Relief and Works Agency.

During the meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister, both sides highlighted prospects for cooperation in various fields, including economic, trade, tourism, culture, and education. Minister Bayramov informed about the post-conflict situation in the region, urging international support for peace-building measures and prevention of Armenia's non-constructive position. The ministers exchanged views on challenges in their relations and emphasized the significance of continued dialogue for issue resolution.
