Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan Sign Series of Documents in Turkmenbashi
On December 14, the presidents of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Ilham Aliyev, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Sardar Berdimuhamedov met in Turkmenbashi.
According to the official website of the President of Turkmenistan, as a result of the meeting, a joint statement of the heads of state and documents related to cooperation in the fields of commercial and economic, science, education, culture, customs, energy, and transport were signed.
According to the Press Office of the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev said that in January–October 2022, the trade turnover of Azerbaijan with Turkey increased by 45 percent and reached 5 billion dollars. "Nearly 20 billion dollars have been invested from Azerbaijan into the economy of Turkey, and about 14 billion dollars have been invested from Turkey into the economy of Azerbaijan. This year, the trade turnover with Turkmenistan has increased five times. This is a record indicator," he added. According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan have achieved great success in transport and logistics.
"Azerbaijan is an active participant in the East-West and North-South transport corridors and has implemented all the main projects related to railway, road, and air transport in its territory. As a result, Azerbaijan has become an important transit country. In the first ten months of 2022, from Azerbaijan's territory, the total transit traffic volume has increased by more than 80 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year. Currently, we are actively engaged in the opening of the Zangazur corridor. Forty percent of the works on the railway line and 70 percent of the works on the highway in the part of the Zangazur corridor that passes through the territory of Azerbaijan have been completed. All work for 2024 will be completed in 2018, and as a result, a new transportation corridor will be created. The Baku International Sea Trade Port has a capacity of 15 million tons of cargo per year, and it is planned to allocate funds to increase this volume to 25 million tons," he noted. The head of state said that more than 100 million dollars would be invested in the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, and its transmission capacity would be increased from the current 1 million tons to 5 million tons. "Azerbaijan has the largest commercial fleet in the Caspian Sea with more than 50 cargo ships." Azerbaijan has one of the largest civil air cargo fleets in our region, with 18 cargo planes. It is planned to add nine more planes to our cargo fleet in the next ten years. Currently, Azerbaijan has eight international airports functioning," the President said.
Sardar Berdimuhamedov said that new realities are emerging in the region. "Important steps are being taken regarding cooperation in the fields of energy and transport. Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey are taking multilateral and coordinated steps in this direction. We think that cooperation in the field of transport should be strengthened. I think that it is necessary to develop interparliamentary relations. Especially in the current sensitive time, relations in other fields should continue," he added. According to the president, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey will continue their cooperation in the future.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that they would further strengthen relations. "The tripartite platforms established with the participation of the ministers of the three countries are yielding positive results. We are ready to cooperate with our Turkmen and Azerbaijani brothers in the Caspian Sea. We are also ready to cooperate in the field of electricity exports from Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to our country," he said. Erdoğan believes that the parties should start working on transporting Turkmenistan's natural gas to Western markets. Erdoğan also emphasized the importance of the Middle Corridor, which passes through the territory of three countries. "We have completed an important part of this corridor with the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. We must facilitate border crossings and customs procedures. Eliminating duties or making price reductions for cargo carriers of all three countries will increase our trade turnover," he noted.
On the same day, a meeting was held between Parviz Shahbazov, Fatih Dönmez, and Charymurad Purchekov, the energy ministers of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan. The Turkmen side expressed interest in increasing and diversifying the supply of energy carriers to the world, including European markets. The parties discussed the transportation of Turkmenistan's natural gas to Europe through the territory of Azerbaijan and Turkey.
