Azerbaijani Army Enters Lachin City

On August 26, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the Azerbaijani Army entered the city of Lachin and took control of the villages of Zabukh/Aghavno and Sus. "Today, on August 26, we - Azerbaijanis returned to the city of Lachin. The Azerbaijani army settled in Lachin. The villages of Zabukh and Sus were taken under control. On this occasion, I congratulate all the people of Lachin and Azerbaijan. Long live Lachin! Long live Azerbaijan," Ilham Aliyev wrote on Twitter.

20 Armenian families who left  Lachin and Zabukh/Aghavno were settled in the Syunik province of Armenia.

On August 25, Saleh Mammadov, the Chairman of the Board of the State Agency of Azerbaijan Motorways, said that the construction of the 22-kilometer road bypassing Lachin to Stepanakert/Khankendi had been completed. The Azerbaijani side has built an additional road of 4.8 kilometers to ensure the movement of the Armenian population.

The de-facto Press Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of separatist Nagorno-Karabakh said that the Shusha-Lachin-Goris section of the interstate highway connecting Karabakh with Armenia would operate up to and including August 31 this year. During this period, the free and safe movement of people will be ensured by Russian peacekeepers.

On November 10, 2020, after a 44-day military conflict, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement ending active military operations in the region. "According to the parties' agreement, the plan for constructing a new transport route connecting Khankendi [Stepanakert in Armenian] and Armenia along the Lachin corridor in the next three years will be determined with the redeployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent to protect this route later. The Azerbaijani side guarantees the safety of the movement of citizens, vehicles, and cargo through the Lachin corridor in both directions," the document stated.
