Azerbaijani Envoy Suggests 'Zangezur Corridor' Could Benefit Armenia's Economy
In an interview with the German newspaper Zeit, published on May 8, Elchin Amirbayov, the Azerbaijani President's Special Representative, discussed the potential benefits of opening the 'Zangezur corridor' for Armenia. Amirbayov highlighted that this initiative could enhance Armenia's relations with Turkey and generate additional revenue through transit fees.
He elaborated that the corridor could help Armenia break out of its current state of isolation. However, Amirbayov warned that if Armenia refuses to allow a road and railroad to pass through its southeastern region, Azerbaijan is prepared to construct a similar route through Iran. "We can build a road and railroad further south, through Iran, and it will be only ten kilometers longer," he stated.
Notably, in October of 2023, Amirbayov emphasized the necessity for Armenia to provide Azerbaijan with long-overdue guarantees to ensure uninterrupted traffic on the corridor, which aims to connect the main part of Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhichevan. "Armenians probably misunderstood us in connection with this corridor. Because the Azerbaijani side has no claim to these territories and recognizes them as sovereign territory of Armenia," he asserted during a previous statement. He also mentioned that ensuring the corridor's security remains a separate and significant issue.
