Azerbaijani Presidential Aide: "Baku Recognizes Zangezur as Sovereign Territory of Armenia"

In an interview with the Russian service of the BBC on October 16, Elchin Amirbayov, the representative of the Azerbaijani President on Special Tasks, said that Baku recognizes Zangezur as a sovereign territory of Armenia.

Amirbayov noted: "However, we must know that the other party will ensure the safety of movement along the corridor. Every person who gets on the train from the main part of Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan or in the opposite direction to us Passengers need security." According to the official, Baku is ready for negotiations, but if Armenia prefers to prolong the process, Azerbaijan is ready to take the route through the territory of Iran.

The presidential assistant said the border delimitation process is very painful. "Thus, during the Soviet period, the administrative border between the two republics was drawn very tentatively - no one thought that it would become an interstate issue. As a result, some of the border villages inhabited by Armenians fell to the Azerbaijani side, or vice versa. In addition, there are various Soviet maps on which separate parts of the border are distinguished. It is not yet clear how the parties will agree in these cases. The main issue is whether the parties will have the political will to resolve this issue peacefully. The sooner it is agreed upon, the better. At this time, there will be less possibility of resuming some military operations," the Azerbaijani President on Special Tasks representative stressed.

It's noteworthy that the United States Department of State has refuted the Politico report alleging that Secretary of State Antony Blinken cautioned US lawmakers last week about a potential Azerbaijani attack on Armenia in the upcoming weeks.

In written comments to Armenpress news agency, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the reporting in the article is “inaccurate and in no way reflects what Secretary Blinken said to lawmakers.”

“The United States strongly supports Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We have stressed that any infringement of that sovereignty and territorial integrity would bring serious consequences,” Miller said.
