Azerbaijani Pro-Government Media Threaten France to Cut Off Uranium Transit

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On 2 August, an article titled "Radioactive cargo to Paris via Azerbaijan" was published on the Caliber.az website, which is known for its links to Azerbaijan’s government. In this context, the article appears to be a message from Azerbaijan to France regarding the potential dependence of France's nuclear energy on Azerbaijan's position regarding uranium supplies from Central Asia. The article emphasises that Azerbaijan's opinion and interests should be taken into account in France's efforts to secure uranium supplies, given Azerbaijan's strategic role in the transport of uranium through its territory.

The article highlights the allegedly difficult situation in France caused by the reduction of uranium supplies from Niger for political reasons. The disruption of uranium supplies affects not only France but also other countries that rely heavily on nuclear energy. The article underlines that Azerbaijan has emerged as a key state whose opinion can influence the operation of French nuclear power plants and its global nuclear marketing strategy.

Azerbaijan's control over a significant portion of the world's uranium shipments since the beginning of Russia-Ukraine war, particularly through its territory, gives it leverage in this situation. The article suggests that France's nuclear ambitions, particularly its plans to build nuclear power plants abroad, are at risk because of its dependence on Central Asian uranium, which now passes through Azerbaijan.

The article questions whether Azerbaijan should facilitate the transport of such a dangerous cargo through its territory to support a country that is perceived as pursuing anti-Azerbaijani policies and spreading negative narratives“ about Azerbaijan worldwide. The publication expresses concern about France's cooperation with Armenia in building “small nuclear power plants” and warns of the potential risks of such cooperation, especially given the seismic activity in the region and the threat it poses to the environment.

It should be noted that relations between Azerbaijan and France are at a low level against the background of the strengthening alliance between Paris and Yerevan.
