Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry Clashes with EU over Aliyev's Controversial Remarks

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

At the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union meeting held in Brussels on January 22, Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said, "President Aliyev's recent territorial claims cause great concern. Any violation of the territorial integrity of Armenia is unacceptable and will have serious consequences for our relations with Azerbaijan."

The issue of withdrawing French diplomats from Azerbaijan was also discussed at the meeting. Borrel said that they expressed their solidarity with France in this matter.

On January 23, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry rejected the claims made by Josep Borrell. "The blatant distortion of facts by the EU High Representative is a disregard for Azerbaijan's legitimate interests, and such threatening rhetoric is a clear example of the double standard that further strains Azerbaijan-EU relations. In addition to completely distorting the views of the President of Azerbaijan regarding the historical facts regarding the territories of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the High Representative incites militarization and aggressive policy against Azerbaijan," the report added.

"In addition, the EU representative's expression of solidarity with France regarding the expulsion of diplomats from the country is an open interference in the ongoing legal investigation process and is tantamount to justifying the illegal actions of French diplomats expelled from Azerbaijan. Such a biased statement demonstrates how some states, which, in addition to ignoring unjustified measures against Azerbaijan's diplomats in France, blatantly ignore all the rules and guidelines of diplomatic behavior and refuse to investigate the case, have a negative impact on this institution," the information noted.
