Azerbaijan's Satellite Allegedly Crashes Space Debris
On April 20, Azerbaijan's Earth observation satellite Azersky completed its mission one year earlier than the planned operational period, i.e., in the 9th year of its operation. Although measures were taken to restore the connection with the satellite where the data exchange stopped, it was not possible, the Space Agency ("Azerkosmos") under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport reported.
According to the information received from the US Space Surveillance Network, the Azersky satellite continues to fly in its orbit. "Currently, as a possible reason for the termination of data exchange with the satellite, it is likely that the energy supply of the satellite failed as a result of a collision with small space debris or meteorite. The Azersky satellite, which was launched in 2014, made great contributions to the field of Earth observation and geoinformation services in general and met domestic demand. It has played an invaluable role in the payment, providing support for ensuring national security and creating a scientific research and personnel base in the space field in our country. From the date we started commercial activities on Earth observation, the economic benefit obtained from the satellite has been 1.5 times more than the investment. The mission of the Azersky satellite has been completed. "Despite the strike, we will continue our Earth observation services," Azerkosmos reported.
