Belarus' Lukashenko Cautions Armenia on Western Inclination, Emphasizes Existing Relations

| News, Politics, Armenia

On September 12, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized the importance of fostering good relations between Belarus and Armenia during a meeting with representatives of various nationalities residing in the country.

He stated, "It wouldn't be bad if we had good relations with Armenia, as before, despite any shortcomings or nuances. Believe me, none of this is our fault. We have always tried to support Armenians in every way possible, treating them as close allies and cooperating with them in all areas."

Lukashenko pointed out Armenia's growing inclination toward the West and the European Union, expressing skepticism about the direction of their foreign policy. He remarked, "You want to go to the West, to the EU... What West? We are not against cooperation with the West or the Americans, but you see their policy. Tomorrow, a new leadership might come to power in America, perhaps the same leadership under Kamala Harris. And with that, the policy will completely change. They have this habit of saying, 'Who are you? We don't know you.' And when reminded of past relations or agreements, they deny it. I've been telling your leadership this all along. If you don't understand, I am an old man in politics; I have seen a lot. You can't trust them."

The President of Belarus also urged Armenia not to abandon its established relationships with traditional partners. "All sorts of things happen. But don't lose what you already have. You have this 'tit in your hands'—don't chase after the crane just yet. Let's hold on to the tit we have. Don't lose this friendship, this brotherhood. It's a shared economic market; it's mutual aid. If you lose it, you may not gain anything elsewhere. Do you think Armenia is expected somewhere? No one is waiting for us, neither Armenia nor Ukraine. Look, this will unfold before our eyes. Everyone is focused on their own issues, and they want to solve their problems at the expense of others."

Lukashenko concluded by expressing confidence in the Armenian people, stating, "Armenians are very smart people, and shortly, they will figure out where their true happiness lies."
