Central Asia Visit: Georgian Parliament Speaker Engages in High-Level Talks
During his visit to Şanlıurfa province on April 8, Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, engaged in a meeting with Nuriddinjon Ismoilov, the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber (Lower House of the Parliament of Uzbekistan). They emphasized the close political and economic ties between their countries. Speaker Papuashvili expressed gratitude for Uzbekistan's consistent support of Georgia's territorial integrity. The discussions ranged from bilateral relations to cooperation in trade and energy sectors. Both parties highlighted the significance of parliamentary collaboration, agreeing to further strengthen ties through a Memorandum of cooperation and by facilitating high-level visits.
On the same day, Papuashvili also met with Tanzila Narbaeva, the Chairperson of the Senate (Upper House of the Parliament) of Uzbekistan. They discussed the friendly relations between Georgia and Uzbekistan, emphasizing historical respect and mutual appreciation. The parties committed to enhancing parliamentary cooperation and explored opportunities for regional collaboration, particularly in transport and logistics, within the framework of their official visit to Central Asia.
Additionally, Speaker Papuashvili held discussions with Abdulla Aripov, the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, during which they reflected on the successful cooperation between their nations over the past 30 years of diplomatic relations. Focus areas included parliamentary ties, transport-transit potentials, and economic cooperation, mentioning the prospective opening of the Uzbekistani Embassy in Georgia. These meetings were part of the Speaker's official visit to Central Asia.
On April 9, Speaker Papuashvili met with Serdar Berdimuhamedow, the President of Turkmenistan, reaffirming the productive cooperation between their nations both bilaterally and within international organizations. Discussions centered on trade, economic, and transport-logistics cooperation and joint regional projects. The unveiling of a monument of Shota Rustaveli in Ashgabat was acknowledged as a significant gesture to strengthen the bond between the two peoples.
On the same day, Speaker Papuashvili also met with Rashid Meredov, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and Dünýägözel Gulmanowa, the Speaker of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. The discussions revolved around political-level relations, regional cooperation, and parliamentary diplomacy, focusing on exchange visits and deepening inter-parliamentary friendship groups.
Continuing his official visit to Central Asia, on April 11, Speaker Papuashvili met with Erlan Qoşanov, the Chairman of the Mäjilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Both parties recognized the historic significance of the meeting as an opportunity to enhance cooperation between Georgia and Kazakhstan. Discussions encompassed various areas of bilateral relations, with an emphasis on strengthening parliamentary ties, leveraging the Middle Corridor for transport and transit, and sharing experiences in implementing reforms.
