Clash Erupts Among Displaced Nagorno-Karabakh Residents in Yerevan Protest

A clash erupted among forcibly displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh protesting outside its representative office in Yerevan. The protesters began shouting and pushing each other, although the exact cause of the conflict was not immediately clear. Police intervened to halt the altercation and began detaining some of the protesters.

Nagorno-Karabakh's de facto president Samvel Shahramanyan addressed the forcibly displaced Karabakh residents, but he emphasized that there were certain issues he couldn't discuss openly as it would jeopardize Armenia's and Karabakh's interests.

“There are certain issues related to that document, which I cannot talk about here,” said the Karabakh president, emphasizing that “no document can dissolve the republic created by the people.”

He mentioned that the document about the Karabakh Republic dissolution was adopted to halt military operations.

As the protesters continued to disrupt the dialogue, Samvel Shahramanyan suggested meeting with a group of several dozen displaced Karabakh residents inside the building. Despite tight security around the building, a group of these residents managed to enter and meet with the President.

The individuals in the meeting reported that they did not reach any conclusive decisions or agreements during the discussion.

Samvel Shahramanyan was elected as the Karabakh president on September 9, replacing Arayik Harutyunyan, who had resigned due to a lack of public trust in the government and its officials. On September 28, Shahramanyan signed an official document to dissolve the Nagorno Karabakh Republic by the end of the year.

Some experts and political circles in Armenia have doubts about Shahramanyan’s role in the process and contemplate the possibility of his having a shady role in these events.
