Controversy After Elections in United National Movement

| News, Politics, Georgia

On January 30, Nugzar Tsiklauri, a United National Movement (UNM) member, stated that the UNM party took a step back with today's [election day] decision. "Today's decision means that money and informal influences won over politics and political ideals," he added.

He disagrees with the course of governance of the new management and will oppose them in all possible democratic ways. "For me, as well as for many of my friends, political goals remain unchanged in the current political stage. This is the freedom of Mikheil Saakashvili and the defeat of the Russian regime in Georgia," he added.

"I do not agree with the course of governance of the new management, nor with the statements that we heard during the pre-election period, and I will oppose it in all possible democratic ways. Also, I will not have any participation in the process that will be formed as a result of informal influence about the management," a member of the United National Movement said.

On the same day, Koba Nakopia announced that he was leaving the post of Chairman of the Political Council of the United National Movement.

"I am still the chairman of the political council of the National Movement, although, from today, I will probably no longer be. I am leaving the post of the chairman of the political council of the United National Movement, as well as the political council itself. I remain only an ordinary party member until Mikheil Saakashvili, Putin's personal prisoner, is in prison until Mikheil Saakashvili is transferred abroad for treatment, which is the only way to save his life. Then I will decide whether I will stay in the party or not, until then I will stay in the party, it is inevitable and will not be discussed. I will decide between leaving the party after Mikheil Saakashvili is free, and I will have the opportunity to communicate with him," Nakopia added.

On January 31, Giorgi Vashadze, the leader of Strategy Builder (Aghmashenebeli), stated, "I hope that the mutual attacks, mutual accusations, and establishment of some clichés will end in the opposition."

"Today, the Georgian Dream is very weak. The only thing that makes it stronger is the opposition faction, mutual accusations, and gossip politics. We should talk about the problems of young people, the importance of the European course, and job creation because the government claims that we have double-digit economic growth and nothing is added to our pockets. This is politics, this is our task. Georgian Dream has managed to make us talk about everything except what is an urgent issue in politics," Vashadze said.

He added: "Levan Khabeishvili made a promise, including to the voter who supported him, that the party's management will be transparent. He said that Merabishvili and others are not running the party but the people who will specifically take over the party. Let's wait for this process - they must hold a congress and political council elections. I do not want to cross a red line because someone said something. This is not the right approach because we should look for the problem not in the opposition wing, but in the government, which today violates the constitution and ignores the Euro-Atlantic integration."

On the same day, Lelo MP Ana Natsvlishvili emphasized, "The past has won in the National Movement - we do not see the purpose of cooperation with a party, the results of which show that it is returning to the past."

"After this decision, the rest of the political entities, including Lelo, will formulate our position and how we see the relationship or partnership in the future. In my estimation, unfortunately, in the National Movement, the past has won, not the future or visions of the future. Lelo is focused on the future, on the western, safe future of Georgia, and accordingly, we will continue to move towards the future. We do not see the purpose of cooperation with a party, the results of which show that it is returning to the past. As for how the processes will develop in the future, if we see radical changes and orientation to the future, we are ready to talk with everyone, but now I really don't see the prerequisites or resources for strategic cooperation with the party where the past and the methods of the past have won, which I didn't like then and I don't like it now," Natsvlishvili said.

Notably, on January 30, Levan Khabeishvili, a member of the Georgian Parliament, defeated Nika Melia and became the new leader of the opposition United National Movement (UNM). Against Melia's 40% (16,476 votes), the victor received 52.58% (21,656 votes). Using an electronic voting machine, the UNM party conducted the elections from January 28 to January 30. There were 49,638 registered party members, and 41,264 of them cast ballots.
