Controversy Between Armenia and Separatist Karabakh Over Recent Developments

At a press conference on January 10, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the people of [separatist] Karabakh should themselves make decisions on their status.

"They [the Karabakh Armenians] should talk about it because they have to make decisions, and we will provide support by all available means. Today we provide humanitarian and financial support to Nagorno-Karabakh - we help with what we can," Pashinyan said in response to a question about Armenia's position on the status of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the right of its people to self-determination.

On January 11, a session of the de-facto Security Council of separatist Nagorno-Karabakh was convened under the leadership of Arayik Harutyunyan, the de-facto President of Nagorno-Karabakh. The consequences of the one-month-long humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh due to the closure of the Lachin Corridor and the high-level political statements made in recent days regarding it were discussed. As a result of the meeting, the Council of Nagorno-Karabakh adopted a statement.

"The thoughts expressed by the President of Azerbaijan during the press conference held on January 10 of this year proved once again that all this is nothing but an obvious manifestation of the threat of force by the Azerbaijani authorities in the Karabakh conflict settlement process, which is a continuation of the 2020 attack against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh of the 44-day war unleashed by Azerbaijan," the statement added.

"In the context of these realities, several claims and views expressed by the Armenian Prime Minister during yesterday's press conference have raised concerns, as they do not correspond to the ideas of the nationwide struggle as well as the position adopted by the people and authorities of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh," the information stated.

"Accordingly, we appeal to the international community to assume responsibility for preventing the terrorist actions undertaken by Azerbaijan, the planned ethnic cleansing, and the new genocide being prepared. The people of Nagorno-Karabakh and the authorities are sure that the Diaspora Armenians will continue to support the decision made by their brothers and sisters in Nagorno-Karabakh. We urge the Armenian authorities to be guided exclusively by the position of promoting and protecting the right of self-determination of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh in international courts, using all the opportunities and all the tools of the internationally recognized state," the statement emphasized.
